Text

Nel bosco senza foglie
cacciando una pernice molto stanca.
saltomm'innanzi una lepre bianca.

La sua bella vaghezza
lasciar mi fece la caccia primiera
e seguir l'altra con la mia levriera.

Voltandosi pi· volte
usc8 de' cani e fugg8 in una tana
e l8 fu presa timorosa e sana.

In braccio la ricolsi e la baciai:
caccia pi· dolce gia ma' non cacciai.

Translation

I had been chasing for a long time
a partridge in a barren wood
when a white hare jumped before me.

Her lovely beauty
made me forget the previous chase.
and follow the new quarry with my greyhound.

Turning about several times.
she escaped from the dogs and fled into a den.
There she was caught, frightened but unharmed.

I gathered her in my arms and kissed her.
I never hunted a sweeter quarry.
