Text

Qual lege move la volubel rota?
Fortuna cieca. L'uom da nul'ascende
e 'l pi· cativo pi· triunfo prende.

Quello a chi de belta la verde fronde
cinge la testa, el fianco in tera preme
e mendicando reduce a le streme.

Vedese la virt· quando l'uom perde
e 'l vicio quand'ol entra 'l prato verde.

Translation

Which law moves the voluble wheel?
Blind chance. Man rises out of nothing.
and the worst one has the greatest triumph.

But the one on whose head is the green crown of beauty
lies prostrate on the ground, and begs.
reduced to extremities.

In losing one displays virtue;
but the lush green pastures lead one to vice.
