Text

Se premio de virt· F sol onore.
molt'F fallace de zascun la brama
che senza lei se crede aquistar fama.

s8 ch'ela F priva e fuor d'ogni sienzia
seguendo l'ombra e non la vera esenzia.

unde a la vista et al parer attende
voltando sempre col disio fervente
da l'eser proprio la volubel mente.

Ma se pur gloria al mondo F digna laude.
ch'era 'l disio nel vano intelletto.
vertute aquista e giungine a l'efetto.

Translation

If the only reward for virtue is honour.
the craving of anyone who thinks he can acquire fame
without virtue is very much misguided.

Such fame is flawed, and devoid of true wisdom.
as it goes after a shadow, not the true essence.

The voluble mind goes after outward show and appearance.
always turning away, with burning eagerness.
from its own true being.

But, granted that glory, which is desired by vain intellects.
is worth achieving in this world, you should acquire virtue
and make it conspire to the desired effect.
